When you first see a giclee (pronounced
gee-CLAY) print, you might mistake it for an original artwork rather
than a professional reproduction. The process of giclee printing,
whether on paper or canvas, gives such lush color, such sharp detail and
such sub-stance that it has become the preferred method of professional
artists and photographers for fine art reproductions of their original
work.
A giclee is an individually produced, high-resolution, high-fidelity,
high-tech reproduction done on a special large format printer. Giclees
are superior in every way. The colors are brighter, last longer, and are
so high-resolution that they are virtually 'continuous tone', rather
than tiny dots. The range, or "gamut" of color for giclees is far beyond
that of lithography, and details are crisper.
Giclees have become the new darlings of the art world, coveted by
collectors for their fidelity and quality, and desired by galleries and
artists alike because they don't have to be produced in huge quantities
with their large layout of capital and storage.
In the giclee process the inks used are pigmented and not dyes.
Pigmented inks ensure a long-lasting, more fade resistant image. We use
six colors (light cyan, cyan, light magenta, magenta, yellow and black -
and somteimes two blacks) of lightfast (fade resistant) pigmented inks
and finer, more numerous, replaceable printheads to spray ink onto the
page, actually mixing the colors to create truer shades and hues. The
result is a wider color gamut, and the ability to print on either canvas
or high quality fine art papers.
