Background on the Paintings
|
I
still paint the old fashioned way; on an easel
with paint and canvas and brushes and all of
that. No camera, computer or digital
stuff.
I create an image, usually an
acrylic on canvas, and then I have that work
photographed in special studio facilities.
I color correct and approve the proof with the
team and then have that image giclée'd:
printed out with the incredible spray jet
technique.
I often repaint canvas giclées
extensively, and
will often put a sketch on the fine art paper giclée.
I like everything to be unique

The bright light streams in from the
parking lot as the
early-to-knock-off-work crowd begins to
gather, bringing their bravado and their
b.s. to the beer-drenched poolroom. But
the crowd hasn't shown up yet. There
are snooker tables and regulation pool
tables - 9-ball is the big favorite.
The real players bring their own sticks
in cases that look like they belong to
the symphony orchestra. The pool sticks
on the walls are the kind that can reach
around corners. Muted T.V.s overhead
flash sports re-caps and dolled-up news
gals, while banners fluttering above
alert us to another brewery formula
promo. But in this painting, the tables
are silent for now, the glasses neatly
stacked upside down, the empty swivel
chairs turned to the bar, capturing the
moments before the sharp click and long
rumble of the balls rolling down from
the pockets will be heard, when the bets
will go down. |

When they ask you to paint their
poolhall, you naturally spend some time
there. I watched from across the
bar, over the glasses neatly stacked
upside down, the empty swivel chairs
turned to face a lone player practicing
his stickwork. The neon beer signs
shining off the gloss paint, and sound
of balls rolling down from the
pockets...other than that total silence
- the crowd hadn't shown up yet. |

A lot of people have told me how they
were coming through the treasure coast,
some even said they were camping on the
lagoon and
found Jong's, stopped and liked it and everything around it so much they
decided to move here. Funny the reasons why people end up
where they do. |

We
went through a lot of weather...and
twice we had enormous hurricanes sitting
on top of us for hours and hours and
hours not going anywhere. Once the
"freight train" sound left, and we dared
to venture outside to survey the damage,
I caught this scene at the pier. A
glorious but strange sky - no longer
ominous but not exactly calm looking
-
just remarkably
beautiful.
Flotsam floating in the water, seaweed
washed up everywhere, pieces of houses
and boats and toys you name it.
And hot! Nature was telling us
though that today would be a better day. |

new immigrants from parts northerly. Old haunts and old growth
bulldozed.
A 4th installment of this painting may
be when rooms-to-go delivers the
complete home-environment
package with 3 years to pay, then the pool enclosure
people clog up the street for a week, and then the ceremonial
planting of their first hibiscus.
Maybe this will go on forever ...part 7 the new baby, part 14
the sheriff's office busts the teens in the driveway...who knows?

An eerie light this time
of year.
There's a morning after for every-thing, even on
that old, old road out of town. The Tigua, the
Mescalero Apache,
the Jesuits, the Conquistadors, Pat Garrett and even I
used to get outta town and follow the river through the
pass up to old mesilla on this road, right past this
very spot.
This "corner" is actually
at the intersection of Mexico, New Mexico and Texas, at
the bend in the Rio Grande where Jack Nicholson waded
over to return the baby and across from the hidden
airport used to smuggle the contra drugs and guns during
President Reagan an Ollie North days.

3 great states United as One - Chihuahua, New Mexico and Texas
...meeting right here in such perfect harmony. The
skinny Rio Grande - Rio Bravo runs right behind
the Dixie Ethyl. A giant red neon cross shines
from atop the mountain Cristo Del Rey to the
right of it; a honeycomb of paths running up to
the top and down the other side to the battered
fence that surrounds the old landing strip used
back in the Iran Contra & Drugs days when the
President didn't have to pay attention and when
a lieutenant knew what a lieutenant had to do
with 8 planeloads of cocaine and a Persian
carpet.
I used to live a few blocks from here.

Nina and her Westie on the Indian River
Lagoon. This is the joy of running at 60 mph on
glass-like water. The wakes from the other boats
kick up a lot of brackish
water on the windshields of our boats leaving
us a salty mess to look out of, but the payoff
is in the huge numbers of
dolphins and manatees we spot along the way. Good to have a
jet boat, no propeller to chew up the wildlife.
This is just north of Grant, Florida where the
intra-coastal spreads out wide and speed limits aren't an
issue, or so I've heard. |

So dry! And when there was rain
falling down from above, the drops just evaporate
before they ever even hit your face ... believe it or not!
The
mountains have petroglyphs from prehistoric times and the tops
are covered with seashells ... as in ocean seashells. My
children were born on the mountain.

don't work so you use a swamp cooler instead (shredded
bark, a sprinkler and a fan in a big box up on the
roof) |

The ebony and ivory is an elegant image I've
never tired of. The aging beauty of the
materials and the simple fact that keys hold the
secret to potential and spirit. I've
played piano all my life. I still own the
same one I started on. If
you can get the timing down, you've got something

elegantly or heck, any other way. How
